MID-CENTURY MODERN RESTORATION IN HOLMES RUN ACRES

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

HOW HOLMES RUN ACRES WAS BUILT

Holmes Run Acres is a mid-century modern neighborhood built in the 1950’s. It is located off Gallows Road, inside the beltway, and minutes from Fairfax Hospital and Mosaic District. Now part of the National Register of Historic Places, Holmes Run Acres consists of over 300 single-family, one and two-story homes developed and constructed by three builders: the Luria Brothers, Gaddy Construction Company, and Andre Boder.

Each builder contributed to the modern departure from the typical Colonial-era houses seen throughout Fairfax County. These houses are unique in that they make use of the landscape. They were either built into the land or stand independently, depending on the natural design of the land. Many of the homes make use of an open floor plan. cathedral-like ceilings, large windows for natural sunlight, over-sized brick chimneys, gabled roofs, and contrasting materials such as wood, brick, and glass.

MID-CENTURY MODERN RESTORATION

The home that we purchased on Holly Court is situated on a quiet cul-de-sac. Over the years, the previous owners added multiple additions that enclosed the space. As a result, the house became a departure from the original intention of the neighborhood. With this project, our goal is to restore the home to the mid-century modern look and feel of the neighborhood.

First, we opened up the main entrance, kitchen, and dining areas by taking out several walls to create a more open and airy living space. Next, we increased the size of the open floor plan in the living room and re-configured the existing bedrooms and two bathrooms to give a natural flow between the rooms. Then, we added a fourth bedroom. The master bathroom now has two vanities and a luxurious walk-in shower. Lastly, we added a stamped concrete patio in the back yard and a new front walkway. The exterior of the home will also receive a face lift with new paint and landscaping,

Finally, some original features of the home include the skylights, high ceilings, and brick fireplace. With 2,300 square feet and a brand new, gourmet kitchen featuring a large center island, this mid-century modern restoration in Holmes Run Acres is sure to sell fast! Stay tuned for the listing and open house announcement. If you are interested in this house, email vip@dutkoragen.com.
